Foreword on The Best Gout Diet
My research into gout and gout treatment has taught me that no one home remedy for gout is the answer to managing your gout attacks. Although the gout diet tips below will be hugely beneficial these need to be looked at in conjunction with other aspects of your lifestyle. For instance, regular exercise to keep a health body weight, rather than any rapid weight loss programs (because you slacked off a bit at Christmas). That said do try and use the gout diet tips below, they will really help you manage your gout and reduce gout attacks. For a more extensive list together with recipes I urge you to check out Lisa McDowell’s excellent report entitled “Cure Gout Now”
Purine Foods and Gout
If you’re going for the best gout diet then it is vital that, you control the uric acid levels in your body. High purine foods in anyone’s diet, can contribute to an increase of uric acid levels in a person’s body. It is well known that high levels of uric acid are a major cause of gout attacks.
Now some people have now problem flushing uric acid out of their system, but if you are one of the unfortunate “others” then watching out for foods containing high purine levels is a must if you wish to avoid future gout attacks.
Gout diet checklist
- 1. Hydration & Flushing: Let’s start with an easy lifestyle change, and consider drinking ample amounts of water at regular intervals throughout the day. This apart from being healthy for anybody will also help to dilute any uric acid in your urinary system.
- 2. Alcohol: I’ve written about this in depth here, however this does need to be listed as a contributor – it really is that important, especially when we look at beer. Now I’m not suggesting you join AA or go to rehab, but a quick thought of the pain a gout attack can cause should help a little when confronted by the temptation of some cold beers on a hot day. The bottom line is that any alcohol, but especially beer can raise those pesky uric acid levels, because alcohol contains high levels of purine. Ok so if you read my article on alcohol, there is always the possibility of having a glass of wine, or for a hot day maybe some sangrilla. Hey my gout diet is for humans and wine doesn’t cause high levels of uric acid. That said, you still need to moderate any consumption of alcohol if you suffer from gout.
- 3. Cut out Fatty Foods: This is another aspect of this gout diet that’s real important. This is not just about eating lean meat, although of course that is a start. Consider also all the fried foods and fast food meals that taste so good. Some fast food burgers are 50% fat and when supersized with French fries are not just unhealthy but definitely off the gout diet list. Please remember that fat is filling and that is why it is so heavily used in most fast food outlets, as it allows these restaurants to serve small amounts that seem to be filling as well as costing (like fat) very little.
- 4. Protein: We all need a little protein help just to make it through our busy day. However it is advisable to reduce any high intake of protein you may be practicing. I would suggest an amount of 5 – 7 oz. of fish or meat a day. Additionally you should also look at all the other protein rich foods that are (unlike meat) actually low in purine. Foods like eggs, low fat dairy products, and then there are the many different variations of tofu, with some like seitan that even resemble both the look and texture of meat.
Best foods for a healthy gout diet
- Cherries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Blackcurrants, Bilberries and Blueberries. The antioxidants of berries come from their flavonoid anthocyanidins. These anthocyanidins are among the strongest antioxidants around. High in vitamin C also these berries lead to a healthier body. Gout suffers need to be as healthy as possible to give themselves a wider choice of gout treatment options.
- Vegetables for a gout diet – string beans, peas (frozen) squash, potatoes, kale, carrots, sweet corn, onions, garlic, spinach, broccoli, avocado, pumpkin, red cabbage, brussels sprouts, tomatoes and beetroot (beets).
- Tofu (made from soybeans) is lower in purines and be used as a substitute for meat in many traditional dishes. There are a number of variants like tempeh and seitan that should also be looked at as they add breadth to the usages that can be found for this oft-misunderstood food type. This is a really useful addition to any gout diet.
- Fruits for a gout diet – plums, cantaloupe melons oranges, grapes, pink grapefruit, bananas, apples, pears and kiwi fruit.
- Fish Oils for a Gout Diet – Fish oils primarily from anchovies, and cod (cod liver oil) and sardines. The anti inflammatory properties of fish oils mean fish oils are good for your gout diet– These fish oils should also help to relieve the pain of a gout attack, because they help to build anti inflammatory prostaglandins and decrease production of pro inflammatory ones.
- Ok I hope these suggestions for a balanced gout diet help, remember that Fifty percent of the uric acid in your body comes from the food you eat.
Foods to avoid for gout sufferers.
- Beer, hard liquor and other alcoholic beverages. (wine is okay)
